Can a Renault Clio just catch fire ?

My Clio ( 02 plate ) has either just caught fire or someones set it on fire , the fire brigade has said it started from the engine which could mean wiring fault in the engine or petrol being poured under the car just wondering if anyone has heard of this or any other model around this time catching fire ?
